Two vendors, two sets of documentation, one rule: every cell below traces back to something one of the two companies published. All of it opened on 2026-09-16, so nothing is blank for lack of access. The sharpest difference is not a score — one model ships as downloadable weights, the other does not.
How this table was filled in
Sources are Ideogram’s model and pricing pages, its prompting guide, and four Midjourney articles. Where a vendor puts something a particular way, the cell quotes that wording, because the two describe the same job in vocabulary that does not line up.
Why no third-party scores appear
Search results for this pairing are full of accuracy percentages. Neither vendor’s documentation states one on any page opened here, so the table carries none.
The side-by-side table
| Dimension | Ideogram 4.0 | Midjourney V8.2 |
|---|---|---|
| Text in images | “Ideogram excels in the generation and integration of text into an image.” | Double quotation marks around words, from version 6 up |
| Quoting | Exact wording in quotation marks | “single quotes or apostrophes (’ ’) won’t work for this” |
| Scripts | English most accurate; non-Latin scripts “often produce unpredictable results” | “works best with the standard Latin alphabet, like English letters” |
| Layout control | Bounding boxes tied to plain-language descriptions; JSON prompting | No text-placement parameter; aspect ratio, Pan, Zoom Out |
| Weights | “The weights are yours to download, fine-tune, and run on your own hardware.” | Not offered; entry is midjourney.com or Discord |
| Resolution | “realistic 2K images” | HD at 2048px on V8.1, SD at 1024px |
| Entry paid tier | Plus, $20 a month or $180 a year | Basic, $10 a month or $96 a year |
| Free path | Free plan on weekly slow credits, amount not published | None in Discord or on the website |
| Private generations | Listed on Plus and above | Stealth Mode, Pro and Mega only |
Text and layout are the rows people argue about, and neither is a clean win. Only Ideogram documents placing a text region deliberately; Midjourney’s parameter list has no equivalent, which is not the same as its output being worse.
Text rendering: two kinds of instruction

The Midjourney page teaches syntax. Double quotation marks turn a phrase into something the model tries to letter, single quotes do nothing, shorter phrases land more reliably, and words like “with the words” or “text” help it spot the job. Its published fixes are Raw mode or a lower Stylize value, plus the Editor or Vary Region.
The Ideogram page teaches a method. Describe the text visually, put it early, quote it, split multi-line copy into chunks with their own placement, reduce complexity elsewhere. Length is the first named limit, documents are explicitly out of scope, non-Latin scripts are called unpredictable, and a typeface cannot be requested by name.
The two documents disagree about almost nothing and still describe different habits. One assumes you iterate on a phrase; the other assumes you plan a composition.
Delivery: open weights against a subscription
Ideogram 4.0 is published as an open-weight model. The model page says the weights can be downloaded, fine-tuned and run on your own hardware, with commercial use covered by a licence that scales with it. It also describes training that coupled bounding boxes to plain-language descriptions, which is where the layout control comes from.
Midjourney V8.2 is delivered as a service. Its documentation points at midjourney.com and Discord, and its article index contains no public API entry. V8.2 became the default on 24 July 2026 and replaced Omni Reference, Character Reference and Retexture with a single Edit Model.
For a team shipping typography at volume, that split matters more than any quality claim: one route lets you host the model, the other rents it. Ideogram’s API also runs on a separate account and balance, which the Ideogram API guide covers.
Price and allowance on both official pages
| Vendor | Tier | Monthly | Billed annually | Included allowance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ideogram | Plus | $20 | $15/mo, $180 | 1,000 credits/month |
| Ideogram | Pro | $60 | $42/mo, $504 | 3,500 credits/month |
| Midjourney | Basic | $10 | $8/mo, $96 | 3.3 hr Fast GPU |
| Midjourney | Standard | $30 | $24/mo, $288 | 15 hr Fast GPU |
| Midjourney | Pro | $60 | $48/mo, $576 | 30 hr Fast GPU |
| Midjourney | Mega | $120 | $96/mo, $1,152 | 60 hr Fast GPU |
The structures do not line up. Ideogram bills 4.0 per single image — one credit on Turbo, two on Balanced, three on Quality — and paid tiers add unlimited slow credits and private generation. Midjourney bills Fast GPU hours and adds unlimited Relax images from Standard up, unlimited video from Pro, and Stealth on Pro and Mega.
Free is where they part. Ideogram’s allowance is described only as weekly credits for eligible accounts, amount may vary, and no free trials exist. Midjourney’s article says a limited trial runs on the niji · journey app and none in Discord or on the website. The Ideogram pricing breakdown goes further into credits.
Examples: the same two jobs written for both tools
Both vendors publish prompts beside the results they produce, so the two can be read side by side.
Example one: one phrase inside a scene
Midjourney’s published good example:
a pastel watercolor landscape with "imagine" written in the clouds
Ideogram’s published example for the same kind of task:
On the wall behind the artist, the phrase "Inspire Daily" is painted in large brush strokes across a mural, at the back of a vibrant and creative studio.
Both strings are short; what differs is what surrounds them. Midjourney names the object the words live on and stops, leaning on “written in” to signal that the phrase belongs inside the picture. Ideogram names the object too, then adds the size of the lettering, the medium, the position in the frame and the room behind it — the guide’s first practice at work, and why the prompt runs roughly three times longer for one line.
Example two: a brand name on an object
Midjourney’s published example of what to avoid:
a logo with the company name Boing
Ideogram’s published example of the same job:
At the bottom of the image, the side of a wooden crate full of oranges shows the brand logo, which consists of a big orange in the background of the word 'Biorange' in stylish juicy/liquid lettering, which forms the logo for the orange juice brand.
The failures are documented, not inferred. Midjourney marks the first prompt as one not to use, and the reason matches the rule above: the name is never quoted, so nothing tells the model to letter it. Ideogram files the second under text as logo and shows the crate as the result. Note the single quotes around Biorange — harmless there, fatal in Midjourney. Carrying a prompt between the tools without changing the quoting is the easiest way to break it.
What neither vendor publishes
- A text-rendering accuracy figure. No page from either company opened here states one.
- A character or word ceiling for text in an image. Both describe the limit qualitatively and neither gives a number.
- A public API article in Midjourney’s documentation index, which is not the same as saying no API exists.
- Ideogram’s free-plan credit amount, described only as weekly, amount may vary.
- Ideogram’s JSON placement syntax, announced behind an unfilled placeholder link. The Ideogram 4.0 prompt guide collects what is documented instead.
Frequently asked questions
Which one renders text better? Neither vendor publishes an accuracy rate, so any answer rests on structure. Ideogram documents placement control and treats lettering as the product; Midjourney documents a quoting rule and advises shorter phrases.
Can Midjourney letter text from single quotes? No. Its page says they will not work and that double quotation marks are required.
Does Midjourney have an API? Its documentation index shows no public API article, and entry is midjourney.com or Discord. The vendor has not stated that no API exists.
Is there a free option? Ideogram’s free plan runs on weekly slow credits with no published amount. Midjourney offers no trial in Discord or on its website, only a limited one on the niji · journey app.
What does open weights change in practice? The Ideogram 4.0 weights can be downloaded, fine-tuned and run on your own hardware under a licence that scales with commercial use. Midjourney’s model is reachable only through its service. The getting-started guide covers that side.
