Comparing GPT Image 2.5 with Midjourney looks like a two-model bake-off. It is not one: Midjourney publishes four subscription tiers with prices and included GPU hours, while OpenAI publishes what its image model can do and leaves per-image pricing to a separate page. This comparison therefore stays inside each vendor’s own documentation, and every gap is labelled as a gap.

Why this comparison is narrow on purpose

Community write-ups reach for phrases like “aesthetic quality” and “text accuracy”. Neither vendor publishes a comparable figure for either, so a verdict built on them is a taste dressed up as a measurement.

What can be compared honestly is four documented things: how each side describes picture control, what each documents about editing, how you actually get in, and how each side bills. The GPT Image 2.5 capability picture supplies the OpenAI half.

Align the versions before you compare

Most pages ranking for this query compare the wrong generation, and the error is easy to inherit.

  • GPT Image 2.5 is the current OpenAI generation, released on 8 September 2026. It ships in the API as two variants: GPT-Image-2.5 Flare, “the default choice for most applications”, and GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst, built for “premium visual workflows that benefit from tighter control across edits”.
  • Midjourney’s current version is V8.2, described in its documentation as “an update focused on aesthetics, image quality, and Personalization”.
  • Pages titled “GPT Image 2 vs Midjourney” compare the previous generation, and later pages reuse those findings unchecked.

A claim about GPT Image 2 is not a claim about GPT Image 2.5. The DALL·E 3 comparison runs into the same trap on the OpenAI side alone.

Picture control: what each side documents

What OpenAI documents

GPT Image 2.5 is “better at understanding complex visual instructions”, and it is “more likely to retain the requested visual direction, composition, and individual details, instead of drifting as instructions become more specific”. Aspect ratio is a documented control: “You can also generate images in any aspect ratio.”

What Midjourney documents

Midjourney’s documentation is built around parameters rather than prose: Style References, Personalization, Stylize, Chaos, Weird, Seeds and a full parameter list. V8.2 is framed as an update “focused on aesthetics, image quality, and Personalization”.

Editing: two different working models

This is where the two products diverge most, and both sides document it well.

For GPT Image 2.5, editing is a conversation. The help centre gives two routes: “Select part of the image with the selection tool, then describe the changes in chat”, or “Skip the selection tool and describe the edit directly in the conversation panel.” It names the mechanism — the model is “better at editing only what you’ve asked for, while keeping the rest of the details the same” — and states the limit plainly: “Highlights are not always precise, and edits may extend beyond the area you selected.” The image editing guide drills that loop.

For Midjourney, editing is a dedicated canvas. The Editor documents Remix, inpainting through Vary Region, Pan and Zoom Out, adding that “inpainting and outpainting now use the new Edit Model for V8.X”. It also documents a Paint brush with Erase and Restore, a Smart Select mask with an explicit “Erase Background” action, and Layers.

One edits by describing, the other by marking up a canvas. Neither page publishes an accuracy rate for its edits.

Access: subscription, chat and code

OpenAI’s launch page states that Images 2.5 “is available to all ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex users across desktop, mobile, and web”, and that both API variants “are available in the API”. The help centre adds: “ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers.” The API overview explains how the variants are split, and the tiers guide covers what OpenAI does and does not publish about access.

Midjourney’s documentation describes a subscription reached through midjourney.com and Discord, with a Stealth Mode restricted to the Pro and Mega plans. Whether a programmatic integration exists beyond that is not stated on the pages cited here, so verify it on Midjourney’s own documentation.

Cost: one published, one unpublished

This is the sharpest documented asymmetry between the two.

Midjourney publishes its tiers: Basic at $10, Standard at $30, Pro at $60 and Mega at $120 per month, or $96, $288, $576 and $1,152 billed annually. Each tier carries a Fast GPU allowance — 3.3, 15, 30 and 60 hours a month — unlimited Relax generations from Standard upward, and extra GPU time at $4 per hour. A company earning more than $1,000,000 USD in gross revenue per year must buy Pro or Mega.

For GPT Image 2.5, the pages cited here publish no per-image price and no quota. The launch page links to a separate pricing page instead, and the help centre says only that ChatGPT Images “is available on all tiers”.

A protocol you can run yourself

Since the official record is thin on numbers, compare the documented parts on your own brief.

A flat vector diagram: one small input tile on the left feeds two diverging arrows, the upper lane ending in a soft matte framed picture and the lower lane in a bolder graphic framed picture.

Freeze the brief

Give both tools the same words, and do not rewrite them per tool.

A poster for a weekend market.
Headline legible at thumbnail size; keep the palette to two colours.
Leave the bottom third clear for opening hours.
Square 1:1 frame, no logos, no watermark, no second person.

Judge by task, not by taste

Score the outputs against the requirements you actually wrote, not against which one you like more. Ask how many attempts each needed, whether the drawn text is readable, and whether the frame survived.

Frequently asked questions

Is GPT Image 2.5 better than Midjourney?

Neither vendor publishes a comparison or a quality score, so no documented answer exists. Decide per task using the four dimensions above.

Does Midjourney have an official API?

The Midjourney pages cited here describe a subscription reached through its website and Discord; they do not document a public image API. Check Midjourney’s own documentation before building on either assumption.

Can I use the same prompt in both tools?

You can send the same text, but the two document different control surfaces — parameters on one side, described instructions on the other. Expect to adapt the wording, and keep the brief itself identical.

What does each one cost?

Midjourney publishes four plans with prices and GPU allowances. The OpenAI pages cited here publish no per-image price; check the current pricing page.
