Gemini AI assistant guide

Turn Gemini into a useful assistant without giving up control.

Gemini can act as a conversational assistant across the web and mobile apps, as a supported Android device assistant, through reusable Gems, and with selected connected apps. The safest setup starts with a narrow job, minimal permissions, explicit confirmation, and regular review.

Ways to use Gemini as an assistant

01

Mobile assistant

On supported Android devices, activate Gemini by touch or voice for contextual help and approved device actions; iOS capabilities follow the Gemini app model.

02

Gemini Live

Use spoken conversation for brainstorming, rehearsal, exploration, camera context, or screen sharing where the current mobile experience supports it.

03

Gems

Save instructions and optional knowledge for a repeatable role such as study coach, editor, planner, or project assistant.

04

Connected apps

With permission, Gemini may work with selected Google, device, or third-party apps to retrieve information or prepare and perform actions.

01

Define one assistant job

Begin with a narrow, testable responsibility instead of asking Gemini to manage everything. Examples include preparing a daily brief, organizing meeting notes, rehearsing an interview, drafting replies, or turning a project document into a checklist.

  • Describe the goal, inputs, allowed actions, forbidden actions, and output format.
  • Identify which steps require your review before anything is sent, saved, or changed.
  • Test with non-sensitive examples until the workflow is predictable.
02

Set up the mobile assistant

On eligible Android devices, Gemini can be selected as the mobile assistant and invoked by supported touch or voice methods. Some familiar Google Assistant actions may differ, use a fallback, or remain unavailable; iPhone and iPad do not use the same system-assistant integration.

  • Install only the official Gemini app and follow the device’s default-assistant settings.
  • Review microphone, camera, location, contacts, phone, messages, photos, and notification permissions.
  • Confirm calls, messages, navigation, purchases, or device changes on screen before proceeding.
03

Create a reusable Gem

A Gem stores instructions and can include optional knowledge sources for a recurring task. Keep the instructions specific and auditable: define role, audience, process, constraints, evidence rules, and what the Gem should do when information is missing.

  • Use approved, current source files and remove private information that is not needed.
  • Ask the Gem to distinguish source-backed statements from suggestions or assumptions.
  • Review the saved instructions and sources whenever the task or policy changes.
04

Connect apps with least privilege

Connected Apps can help with Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Maps, media, messaging, phone, device utilities, and other services depending on platform and account. Availability is not uniform, and connections can expose personal content or enable actions.

  • Connect only the app needed for the current workflow and disconnect unused apps.
  • Check the selected account, target person, time, location, file, and content before approving an action.
  • Do not use a personal assistant connection to bypass workplace authorization or data policy.
05

Review privacy, errors, and automation risk

An assistant can misunderstand intent, select the wrong contact, summarize inaccurately, or act on incomplete context. Keep humans in control of consequential steps and maintain a fallback when Gemini or a connected service is unavailable.

  • Review Gemini Apps Activity, personalization, connected-app data use, and deletion settings.
  • Avoid autonomous financial, legal, medical, employment, security, or public-posting decisions.
  • Periodically audit permissions, saved Gems, connected sources, failed actions, and unexpected results.
