Adobe introduced Firefly Image 5 at Adobe MAX on 28 October 2025, and calls it Firefly Image Model 5 on its own pages. It shipped in public beta inside the same subscription as the rest of Firefly: images at native 4MP, and edits driven by a sentence. What one generation draws is broken down in the Adobe Firefly pricing article.

What Adobe says Firefly Image 5 is

The announcement ranks it “its most advanced image generation and editing model yet”, marks it (public beta) and calls it “commercially safe”. Three sentences carry the substance.

The three claims worth checking

Native 4MP. It is “Able to generate images in native 4MP resolution without upscaling”, a phrase Adobe’s blog repeats. Note what is not claimed: 4MP is the resolution it generates at, not a ceiling it can be pushed to.

Portraits. “Image Model 5 generates lifelike portraits of people with anatomic accuracy”, alongside “photorealistic details that capture lighting and texture”.

Compositions. “Major advancements in complex, multi-layered compositions and natural movement” covers the case where several subjects have to stay coherent at once.

Firefly Image 5 and Adobe Firefly Image 4 side by side

Four Adobe models share one Model dropdown: Firefly Image 3, Firefly Image 4, Firefly Image 4 Ultra and Firefly Image 5. The pair people search for is the last two.

Where the names live in the interface

Adobe’s generate-images page lists them verbatim as Firefly Image 3, Firefly Image 4, Firefly Image 4 Ultra and Firefly Image 5, then adds that “the image generation settings will vary depending on the model that you select”. That is the sentence to remember, because the two models do not accept the same settings sheet.

The cell Adobe leaves empty

No native resolution figure for Adobe Firefly Image 4 or Adobe Firefly Image 4 Ultra appears on any Adobe page read for this article. The honest entry is “not published”, and the pixel dimensions quoted around the web have no Adobe source behind them.

Example: the same prompt, two models, two settings sheets

Adobe’s prompt page supplies the sentence, and it is plain enough to run on either model.

Example one: a portrait on Adobe Firefly Image 5

Woman with long flowing hair and blue eyes, white dress, field of flowers, realistic picture.

Settings: Model Firefly Image 5, Content type Photo, Aspect ratio Portrait (3:4), Visual intensity at its default. Adobe’s table states that Firefly Image 5 generates “A single image”, so one generation returns one candidate.

Example two: the same prompt on Adobe Firefly Image 4 Ultra

Woman with long flowing hair and blue eyes, white dress, field of flowers, realistic picture.

Settings: Model Firefly Image 4 Ultra, Content type Photo, Aspect ratio Vertical (9:16) — documented as “available for Firefly Image 4 and Firefly Image 4 Ultra models” — and Prompt enhancement on, which Adobe allows only for English prompts on those two models. Result: “A single image is generated” here too, at 20 credits instead of 10.

The prompt never changed. Every difference sits in the settings panel, and every label there comes from Adobe’s generate-images page. How to reach it is covered in the Adobe Firefly walkthrough.

Editing with a sentence: Prompt to Edit

Firefly Image 5 merged generation and editing into one model. Prompt to Edit is the tool that exposes it, and Adobe says it “empowers creators to describe how they want to edit an image in their own words”.

Its availability is stated apart from the model’s own status: “generally available to Firefly customers today with Firefly Image Model 5 and partner models from Black Forest Labs, Google and OpenAI”. So the editing tool is not exclusive to Adobe’s model, and Layered Image Editing, which the model “will power”, is “(in development)”. Editing sentences follow the same writing rules as generation prompts, in the Adobe Firefly prompts guide.

What the developer documentation adds

The API pages carry the same model under a different emphasis. “The Image5 model is Firefly’s latest model and is a leap forward in realism, lighting, and composition with native 4 MP resolution for sharper, more expressive results across photography, text, and illustration.”

The identifier is written Image5, without a space, and editing appears as Instruct Edit, which enables users “to generate and refine in one seamless workflow using natural language”. The code path has its own limits, kept in the Firefly API guide.

What Adobe has not published

Pixel dimensions. “Native 4MP” appears in three places; a width and a height never do. Figures such as 2240×1792 come from third-party pages.

A ceiling above 4MP. “Without upscaling” describes the native generation, not the maximum output.

Adobe Firefly Image 4’s native resolution. Checked on the announcement, the blog, the API documentation and the help pages; none states it.

A price per image. Credits per generation are published and the money is not. Unused credits also do not carry over between months.

Any quality figure. There is no published prompt success rate and no scoring of the model against earlier versions.

Prices and beta states move, so treat any figure here without a reading date as stale, including ours.

Frequently asked questions

Is Firefly Image 5 the same as Firefly Image Model 5? Yes. Firefly Image 5 is the product name, Adobe’s own pages write “Firefly Image Model 5”, and the API calls it Image5.

Does Adobe Firefly Image 5 output 4MP? Adobe states that it generates “in native 4MP resolution without upscaling”. The exact pixel dimensions are not published.

How is Adobe Firefly Image 5 different from Adobe Firefly Image 4? Firefly Image 5 returns a single image per generation where Adobe Firefly Image 4 returns four variations, costs 10 credits per generation against 20 for Adobe Firefly Image 4 Ultra, and powers Prompt to Edit. Is Adobe Firefly Image 5 free to use? It is not on Adobe’s list of features with unlimited standard generations. Plan mechanics are covered in the Adobe Firefly free-access guide.
